I am finding that my task is incredibly easier to learn Violin at an advanced age when I have no problems reading the music, and enjoying some agility developed for the piano. Some kids learn by ear well. All are better served learning how to read. Less than one year in, with a great teacher, I am holding my own in a community orchestra.
